Stainless steel has always had an enormous appeal in architecture and is also particularly sustainable as it is fully recyclable. In general, stainless steel is used where it can be easily separated. The recycling rate for stainless steel is currently quoted at 80-90 per cent. As the recycling of stainless steel is a suitable and cost-effective method of material production, it is surprisingly easy to implement in an endless loop. Natural resources are dwindling, so recycling old steel and stainless steel offers a secure source of raw materials. Every person in Germany consumes around 16,000 kilograms of raw materials - every year! Only a maximum of twelve per cent of the raw materials we consume in Germany come from recycling. This is the result of a new study commissioned by NABU.
How sustainable is stainless steel
Even if the production of stainless steel is initially associated with energy consumption, the advantages largely outweigh this: Stainless steel can be categorised as environmentally friendly as it is characterised by its durability. Stainless steel products are not normally disposable.
Recycling
Stainless steel is a high-quality and sustainable material that can be recycled several times without losing its properties. Compared to materials such as aluminium, copper and plastics, stainless steel is more durable, recyclable and less carbon-intensive. For furniture construction, stainless steel offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to chipboard, which often emits volatile organic compounds and residual amounts of solvents. Another advantage of stainless steel is that it is easy to clean and maintain, meaning that products made from this material remain of high quality for decades.
